Town Hall Brawl\u00a0 –\u00a0 Crown Hill Village Summer Street Festival, Seattle\u00a0 –\u00a0 17 June 2022<\/p>\n

The rain was not oppressive and there was a covered area to work from, out of the drizzle, which eventually let up.\u00a0 The show must go on.\u00a0 THB is a tight combo of seasoned professionals, they don’t mess around.\u00a0 Actually, they included “Mess Around” (penned by Ahmet Ertegun and a 1953 hit for Ray Charles) in the set!<\/p>\n

Now this band’s goin’ to play from 9 to 1
\nEverybody here’s gonna have some fun
\nDoin’ the mess around<\/p>\n

Ertegun erudition!\u00a0 \u00a0There is some uncertainty regarding the name of the drummer: the THB website refers to Marty Vadalabene, Facebook refers to Vadavenus Martin.\u00a0 How to annotate?\u00a0 I pondered for a bit, the went with the as-signed version.\u00a0 While stalling ’til the food truck grub was ready, why not include some other attractions?\u00a0 Poet Reed (no relation to the band) composes on-the-spot verse according to info provided by her subjects, but I demurred on dishing autobiographical, I cannot diffuse my focus while sketching.\u00a0 I thought she was blowing off me and my attitude when she departed from her table, so I moved on to the Popcorn Lady.\u00a0 But the poet returned, and cranked out a touching work (reproduced at the bottom of this page)!\u00a0 She commented that we were really doing the same thing, just different media.\u00a0 Spot on, Melanie!<\/p>\n

\nThese sketches scratch
\nthe surface – lines and shadings,
\nblack and white and gray.<\/p>\n

Where do we dwell
\nwhen life has shaped us,
\ncut us all away?
\nA cloud of darkness
\nblots the sun – I blot
\nthe page and pray.<\/p>\n
