Slavic Soul Party – Bronx Library Center – February 12, 2011
Bronx Library Center is on Kingsbridge Road, just down the block from where long-departed (and lamented) Jahn’s Ice Cream Parlor used to be. The performance space is perfectly intimate and accomodating. Slavic Soul Party’s name says it all; they are based in Brooklyn (natch) and have already played in Serbia and Romania. But this was their first appearance in Bronx. They are scholars of the Slavic music genre, have assimilated it and fused it with elements of the overall NYC melange, and blow it hard back at us. Nine musicians in all, so I was frantically scribbling, but got ‘er done. Afterwards me & Toots off to Liebman’s Deli, half of Riverdale’s Jewish gourmet cuisine one-two punch. Alas, the other half, Mother’s Bakery not open.
