Mose Allison – Madison Square Park – June 30, 2010
Although not an unfamiliar venue, this was the first music I’ve seen there. Totally in the front row. Mose is the master of wry cynical sophistication. I start work early at gigs like this – sketching in the drum set so that I just have the player to do once the music begins. I always find it gratifying to get the entire ensemble. With a trio like this I have to decide early on that I’m going for all, then get each portrait started and moved along so that they are finished (or finished enough, as in the case of Ratzo B. Harris) by the time the music stops.
