Albert Ayler Festival – Roosevelt Island – July 10, 2010
Another locale new to me. There had been a deluginous downpour that I missed while in the subway. Upon my tardy arrival, in my haste to get started I just quickly sat myself down on the lawn, soaked my butt good!! A little bit more time to work on Warren Smith, part of the Giuseppe Logan Quartet, would have been nice. Go figure – a saxophone tribute concert and I sketch a drummer, a vibist, and a bassist. There were a number of abrupt shifts here, resulting in the program running early. How’s that for the avant-garde (if not the weather) keeping you on your toes? Gunter Hampel played solo, at some points with one hand each on bass clarinet and vibraphone. Joe Morris was part of the Flow Trio.
