Yosvany Terry Quintet – El Museo del Barrio – November 17, 2012
Terry has been on my to-see list for a while, and even an ill-fated trip to Harlem for a to-be-cancelled gig. So finally – and it turns out “Terrys”, not Terry, as younger bro Yunior is the bass player. Nice hot Cuban jazz plus also I previously sketched Mike Rodriguez earlier this year (w/ Eddie Palmieri!). This was one of the gigs where the impossibility of my task is glaringly evident. I am resigned to the inevitable failures of incompleteness, but I try to incorporate that sense into the design and give its charm a chance to work its way. The shedding of jackets by several players part way through was a major contributor to my reference disorientation.
