Louis Hayes Combo – Riverbank State Park – August 15, 2010
Once again down to Riverbank State Park, where the threatening weather put us indoors for the Louis Hayes combo. Drummer Hayes got started in jazz in his teens and has been around. His brother, Gerald (tenor sax), was recruited for this band; otherwise, it filled out with the up and comers. Time management reared its ugly head as I tried to do justice sketching everybody (5 players) within the temporal confines of the 2 sets. Afterwards we sated our ravenous appetites at Caridad Restaurant on Broadway just below 145th. The waitress explained that the term “Caridad” referred more to Cuba, making this a Cuban food restaurant, although SHE was Dominican. I will need at least two more waitresses to corroborate this information before I’m convinced. Who cares! The rice & beans were hearty and the goat luscious, with hardly any bones.
