Greg Abate / Gary Smulyan Quartet – Dobbs Ferry Riverfront Park – August 18, 2010
Am I the only one finding it peculiar that the baritone sax players (in this case Abate) double on alto (both are E-flat) but rarely on tenor (which is B-flat), while the tenor players more likely skip up to soprano (also B-flat) when they double? So we had an occasional double bari-sax front line in this piano-less combo. Lots of open spaces and they knew what to put there. A healthy mix of standards and originals; the finale was a zippy 2-bari chase through a Bird tune transcription. After one of the best sunsets of the year over the Hudson.
